Psychotherapy: What is it good for?

When you know you are having difficulty, and your family, friends or colleagues aren’t much help (or you don’t feel comfortable telling them what’s troubling you), then it’s a good time to pick up the phone and ask for professional help.  Frankly, it doesn’t really matter what the problem is; a well-trained and experienced psychotherapist can at least give you referral ideas should the issue not be suited to the therapist’s skill set or therapeutic intervention in general.  In any event, when you are struggling with something, chances are you are stressed as well.  Stress can hamper your problem-solving abilities, inhibit your coping skills, and just plain tire you out.  Therapy is an excellent tool in getting the support you need to build psychological resilience, which will increase your capacity to tolerate stress and ultimately enable you to resolve your problems, so you can move on.
